Reuter’s social media front man has decided to let his twitter account collect dust, if only for the time being.

Reuter’s social media editor Matthew Keys has recently decided that Twitter is causing him pre-mature burnout. While Keys has Twitter to thank for his current title as Deputy Social Media editor at Reuters he still finds the social messaging service to be an unnecessary burden on his mental health. For Keys Twitter had become an addiction, an addiction to his audience and an addiction to the constant fire hose of information coming from him and his followers.

The experience of social media related addiction is nothing new. Reports detailing the dopamine kick every time your phone displays an update whether it be email, facebook, or twitter is reason enough to believe that our always-on lives have taken a turn towards the dark side. The outlook will be focused on whether or not addictions, like those experience by Keys, are serious or relegated to the more benign social-ticks that don’t interrupt life but rather serve as minor inconsequential inconveniences.
